The Wayland girls’ cross-country team finished 20th in the Division 2 state championships Saturday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway.
Meanwhile, sophomore ace Rylee Cronkright polished off an amazing season by capturing 12th place and earning all-state accolades. Her placing was eighth in the scoring for teams.
Cronkright completed the five-kilometer course in 18:39, just 31 seconds slower than Jessica Armstrong’s school record of 18:08 set in 2004.
Senior Co-Captain Maggie Whitney, in her last high school cross-country race, completed her race in 45th place with a time of 19:40.1. Foreign exchange student Mie Tornbjerg was 87th in 20:21.1, freshman Naomi Oosterhouse 158th in 21:36.9, junior Zoe Antel 161st in 21:44.8, sophomore Corrina Courser 185th in 22:55 and Co-Captain Abbie Haas 118th in 23:02.9.
Olivia Theis of Lansing Catholic was Division 2 state champion in 16:52.1. Plainwell’s Makenna Vean, who was regional champion a week ago when Cronkright was runner-up, finished fifth.
Lansing Catholic won the Division 2 state title with 77 points, O-K Gold Conference rival Grand Rapids Christian was second with 145 and DeWitt third with 197. Regional champ Otsego was fourth and another Gold member, Forest Hills Eastern, was 10th.
Hopkins junior Jasmine Fisher, the only representative for the Lady Vikings this year, was 71st with a time of 19:44.8. Sophomore Todd Henley, the lone Viking boys’ representative, placed 106th with a time of 17:05.
