A serious traffic crash Monday morning near the Wayland exit on the U.S.-131 expressway shut down the southbound lane between Wayland and Dorr.

Michigan State Police said the accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. Monday on southbound US-131 north of exit 64.

Authorities indicated Scott Maxim of Kentwood was driving a car that ran off the highway and hit several trees and they suspected he suffered a medical emergency because it didn’t appear he attempted to apply the brakes.

An Aero Med helicopter was summoned to the scene after Maxim was extricated from his vehicle.

The expressway at US-131 at 142nd Avenue was closed for about 10 minutes, and there were miles of traffic backups. It was reported that the southbound lane was closed until about 11:30 a.m.
