Service is Jan. 19 at Gun Lake for ‘Albie’ Alberts

Marlin Gene “Albie” Alberts, age 92, of Grand Rapids and Wayland, died Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Albie graduated with honors from South High School in Grand Rapids and then served his country in the US Navy. He went back to school and earned his bachelor of science degree from Michigan State University. He then went to Steelcase and retired after 36 years.

He loved any sport that included a ball — basketball, football, golf, etc. He even played on a semi-pro baseball team. Albie also enjoyed being outdoors to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his children, Gail York, Aleta (Mark) Berghoef, Brook (Gale) Alberts; step-children, Pete (Jenny) Arena, Amy Arena; sisters, Sallie Alberts and Cheri (Keith) Alberts; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by Bess, his wife of 36 years; brothers, Dale and Robert Alberts; and sister, Marlene Loughmiller.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Gun Lake Community Church with Mark Veldt officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service.
