Service Saturday for Hopkins native John ‘Whitey’ Syers

Hopkins native John Howard “Whitey” Syers of Otsego died Tuesday, July 25 at his home. He was 83.

He was born April 24, 1934, in Hopkins, the son of John and Cecil (McBride) Syers. He had worked at Mac Sim Bar, Mead and Rock Ten until his retirement.

In his spare time John enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, going to the casino, playing bingo, spending time with his family especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He married Darlene Roblyer Oct. 4, 1952, at St. John Lutheran Church in Allegan

Also surviving are his children, Mae (Robert) Sousley, Doris Paradine, Mary (Stan) Town, Oney Syers, Glenda (Fay) Brewster, George (Lisa Hazen) Syers, Gail (Rex) Morey and Roy (Gloria) Farnham; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Freda Harper, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Justin Syers, granddaughter Bobby Long, great-grandchildren Johnathon and Lorenzo Mayfield; son-in-law, Robert Paradine; brothers, Carol and Ray Syers and by his niece, Beth Nicholes.

Friends may visit with John’s family starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego until the time of the funeral service at noon. Cremation will follow. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery at a later time.
