Service set for Hopkins standout athlete Louie Stein

Lewis “Louie” Stein, age 64 of Dorr, died Friday, Oct. 9.

A 1974 graduate of Hopkins High School, Louie was a standout wide receiver for the Vikings’ football team and he pitched for the baseball team.

He took great pride in Modern Roofing Inc., the business he helped build with his brother in 1972. Nothing was more precious to him than his family, especially his grandchildren. Louie was known for his love for fishing, hunting, baseball and snowmobiling. He really looked forward to the annual Canada fishing trip and the guys “fishing” weekend at the lake, but his favorite trips were the ones taken with his wife, kids and grandkids.

He was the life of every party with a tremendous sense of humor and a penchant for shenanigans.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Colleen, their children Andy (Carolyn) Stein, Gina Huff, Kelli (Brandon) Hoffman, Valerie Stein, David (Liz) Stein, Emily (Aaron) Warsen; grandchildren, Morgan and Mackenzie Henry, Lauren and Alayna Huff, Maxwell and Oliver Hoffman and newly born Wren Warsen; his siblings Theresa (Keith) Kiel, Robert Stein, Dolores Stein, Melvin (Alice) Stein and many nieces, nephews, family, friends and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Marie Stein; mother-in-law Wanda Beyer; sister-in-law Charlotte Stein and nieces Denise and Kimberly Kiel.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 9498 Wilson Ave. SW, Byron Center. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Sebastian Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice Trillium Woods or St. Mary’s Visitation Educational Foundation.
