Former school librarian Nell Dandrow dies at age 93

Nellie “Nell” Dandrow, age 93, died Saturday, Dec. 25.

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Nell moved to Wayland after much convincing by husband Don. Considering herself a “city girl,” she grew to love the countryside, participating in the local gardening club and camping with her RV group. You could find her behind the candy counter at the Ben Franklin 5 and 10 store, later working for the Wayland School system as a librarian for more than 18 years.

After retiring, she volunteered for over 19 years at St. Mary’s Hospital. She cherished her faith and was a member at Wayland United Methodist Church for more than 66 years, serving on the building committee for the new addition to the church. Nell had the “gift of the gab” and was a master card player, especially spoons.

She is survived by her children Nancy Dandrow, Greg Dandrow; grandchildren Angela, Jessie, Matt, Josh; nine great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Donald Dandrow; parents John and Johanna Schrier; and siblings Jo Nyp, Jake Schrier, and Casey Schrier.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Kubiak-Cook Wayland Chapel, 312 N. Main St., Wayland, MI 49348. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2021 at Wayland United Methodist Church, 200 N Church St., Wayland, MI 49348. Nell will be laid to rest next to Donald at Hooker Cemetery.

In memory of Nell and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to AusCam, an organization run by her granddaughter, protecting vulnerable children.
