Services set for Wayland VFW charter member Dick Hines, 93

Richard57c86300c872e “Dick” Max Hines, age 93 of Wayland, died of natural causes Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Dick served in the U.S. Army during World War II and earned a Battlefield Commission. Since its formation in 1948, he was a charter member of the Wayland VFW Post 7581 and a four-time past commander. In 1998, he was named the first “Wayland Veteran of the Year.”

Dick was a member of the St. Therese Catholic Parish.

Dick will be lovingly remembered by his wife Margie Hines; his children: Richard (Rita) Hines, Kathleen (Dennis) Tiggleman, Reggie (Hilby) Medendorp, and Marcia (Jeff) Genther; his grandchildren: Jeffrey Hines, Dawn Hunsucker, Steven (Meg) Hines, Jill (Tim Henkel) Gillis, Todd Tiggleman, Brian (Sharon) Medendorp, Dion Genther, Brandon (Kristen) Genther, and Dane Genther; his 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; his step-children: Dan (Barb) Calkins, Teresa (Tim) Permoda, Shirley (Jim) Graham, and Barb Jeffers; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; his brother Ronald Hines, Phil (Sonia) Hines; his sister Rosie Boggs; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Ruby Hines, his sister Rita Jean, his grandson Scott Medendorp, and his first wife Bette Hines.

Friends may meet with his family from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Services, Wayland, where a Rosary will be said at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese Catholic Church, Wayland. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with military honors.

Donations in memory of Dick may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America or St. Therese Little Flower School.

    Our nation lost a heroic and great American. Receiving a battlefield commission is a testament to his valor and leadership. That he took off his mud covered combat boots and became an outstanding member of his community is a testament to his leadership and commitment to our nation.
