Funeral Thursday for Kay Moore, 72, longtime teacher

Kay Shafer Moore died Friday, April 16.

She was born to the late Donald and Wanda Shafer on Feb. 26, 1949. Kay grew up in Wayland, where she graduated from Wayland Union High School and continued her education at Western Michigan University. She taught business classes at both Godwin High School and Kelloggsville High School.

Kay’s last teaching years were spent teaching alternative education for South Kent-Godwin Community Education. Kay so enjoyed teaching the high school completion classes for pregnant teens and business training classes for adults. Kay had to retire earlier than planned from teaching due to Parkinson’s disease.

Kay walked down her high school graduation aisle in 1967 and her wedding aisle in 1972 with Wayne Moore with whom she celebrated 49 years of marriage on March 3.  Kay enjoyed sewing, baking, cooking, canning and her beautiful flower gardens. She will be remembered for her deep love for family and friends, her caring and giving spirit, and passion for teaching.

Surviving are her husband and caregiver, Wayne Moore; son, Michael Moore, and grandson, Wyatt Moore; son, Steven Moore (Karie), and granddaughter, Makayla Moore; siblings Karen Hendrick (Jerry), Don Shafer, Jr., Ronald Shafer (Judy), Douglas Shafer (Chris); sister-in-law, Renee Baareman (Tony); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at CrossWind Community Church, 1683 142nd Ave., Dorr. Services will be held at 11 a.m.  Thursday, April 22, at CrossWind Community Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Health Hauenstein Neurosciences – for Parkinson’s research or Wayland Area Ambulance.

    Grew up on Plum Street in Wayland with Kay Lynn and all the other Shafers. Our dads were WWII vets. The whole street was WWII vets. Just one big family. They can take Kay Lynn, but not our memories. Grace’s and my heart go out to the whole family.
