Nellie M. Myers, 90, of Kentwood, formerly of Wayland, died Tuesday, January 7, at Metro Health Hospital.
Nellie was born June 10, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio to Edward and Caroline (Brown) Ballard. She was a 1947 graduate of Thornapple Kellogg High School. Nellie married Alfred H. Myers in 1948 and together they shared 65 years together before his passing May 12, 2014.
Nellie worked on her family’s chicken farm for many years. She was a longtime member at Leighton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed giving back to the community as a volunteer swim instructor at Windsor Woods. She also spent time volunteering at Van Andel Arena for many different events. Most important to Nellie was spending time with her family and friends.
Nellie is survived by her children: Margaret Rasion, Kathleen Clum, Joan (Dave) Allwelt, Laura Nash, Melvin (Flo) Myers, Annette (Ron) Pifer, Cheryl Jensen and Peggy (Ken) Keller, a sister-in-law: Trudy Kruger, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter: Arlene King, a grandson: James Allwelt, sons in law Denny Rasion and Don Clum, siblings Edward, Maryann, Donna, and Marvin; and brother-in-law, Bruce Myers.
Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Beeler-Gores Funeral Home, Middleville. Nellie’s funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Leighton United Methodist Church, 4180 2nd St., Caledonia, Rev. David McBride officiating. Burial will take place in Yankee Springs Cemetery.
