Texas sheet cake easy make and take dessert

by Kathy Hamman Miller

This Texas Sheet Cake recipe was brought back from Texas in 1955 by my mom, who has used it consistently over the years. It’s a easy make and take dessert that still is asked for at picnics, birthdays, and even for graduations.

Ingredients and Instructions for one cake:

In a large mixing bowl mix together and set aside:

2 cups flour

2 cups sugar

1/3 cup baking cocoa powder

Combine and melt in a large measuring cup – this will and should end up being hot.

1 cup water

2 sticks “1 cup” salted butter or margarine

Pour the melted butter with the water over flour and sugar mixture while it’s still hot mixing well. When well mixed, add in:

1/2 cup buttermilk – this can be made with a splash of vinegar in regular milk if you don’t have this on hand.

2 eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla

Pour batter into your set aside greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or when a toothpick comes out clean when poked. Set aside, and start the frosting.

Fudge Frosting Ingredients:

1 stick “1/2 cup” butter or margarine

Grease an 18 x 13 rimmed baking sheet and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

1/3 cup baking cocoa powder

A 16 ounce box of powdered sugar “3 3/4 cups”

2 tablespoons milk or water

1 teaspoon vanilla

Frosting Instructions:

In a saucepan melt the butter along with the vanilla and milk, remove pan from heat mixing in the cocoa. Combine the box of confectioners sugar stirring until smooth. Pour the frosting over the sheet cake smoothing it out while it’s still warm. Let set to firm up, cut into bar sizes. Enjoy!
