Shelbyville man accidentally shoots self while duck hunting

A 28-year-old Shelbyville man suffered State Police logoa self-inflicted gunshot wound while kayaking and hunting at Otis Lake in Rutland Township, Barry County.

Troopers from the Wayland post of the Michigan State Police said they responded to a report from Barry County Disptach that two men who were duck hunting from the shore of Otis Lake heard a gunshot from the lake and a man immediately calling for help. The man, who was not visible from shore, said he had shot himself in the arm.

 

Troopers and Barry County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol officers and the Delton Fire Department found the victim standing in water next to his kayak with a severe gunshot wound to his left forearm. He indicated he accidentally shot himself while exiting his kayak and entering his duck blind.

The man was treated on scene and taken to a landing zone by Mercy Ambulance from Hastings. Aeromed then took the patient to Spectrum Butterworth. The man remained conscious and alert throughout the incident.
