Shelbyville man struck on U.S.-131, taken to hospital

State Police logoA 61-year-old Shelbyville man was struck by a vehicle on northbound US-131 near the 64 mile marker, Wayland, Wednesday when he was attempting to drag a large object, believed to be a television or monitor, out of the road.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Wayland Post reported the pedestrian was in the left lane of US-131 when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. The pedestrian’s vehicle was found parked a short distance north of the crash scene at about 1:35 p.m. Northbound US-131 was totally closed for approximately an hour and a half as a result.

Wayland Fire/EMS responded to the scene. Aeromed helicopter eventually landed on the expressway and transported the victim to Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids.

Michigan State Police were assisted by Allegan County Sheriff Department, Wayland City Police Department, and the Gun Lake Tribal Police. Allegan County Central Dispatch (9-1-1) coordinated responding emergency vehicles.

The crash remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police, Wayland post.
