Shelbyville native Polly Ray, 95, dies in Decatur

Shelbyville native Pauline “Polly” Ray died Friday, June 16, at Hendrickson Home in Decatur. She was 95.

Born to Philip and Pauline (Vlastic) Opatik, she was one of 14 children, she grew up on a farm and remained in southwest Michigan all of her life.

She loved playing Bingo, card and board games, going to the casino, cooking and entertaining family.

She married Vernon Ray in July 3, 1959. He preceded her in death,

She also was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra K. (Robert) Hite, and all of her siblings.

She is survived three children, Donna Rourke, Duane Smith and Tommy (Mary) Smith; six grandchildren, Duane Hensley, Dawn Stevens, Tony (Judy) Jenner, Tina (Jim) Emmons, Tammy Peterson and Rick Hite; many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, a former daughter-in-law, Pamela (Bill) Holroyd.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at the Joldersma-Klein Funeral Home A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28. She will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hendrickson Home or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
