Sheriff’s Dept. reports increased car-deer accidents

Deer are running…

Our office has seen an increase already this season of car-deer accidents.

We want to remind motorists, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk.

• Pay attention to your surroundings and keep an eye along the side of the road.

• If you see one deer cross the road there are usually more that follow.

• Most serious crashes occur when drivers attempt to swerve to avoid the deer.

• If you do not have time to hit the breaks the best thing to do is stay in your driving lane and hit the deer.

What to do if you hit a deer:

– Safely move your vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway and turn your four-way flashers on.

– Contact Allegan County Central Dispatch to report your accident at 269-673-3899. (Be prepared to provide your location, injuries, vehicle description and if there are any additional vehicles involved.)

– Stay in your vehicle while waiting for police to arrive.
