Single family homes project slated in Dorr?

Developer Brian DeSmit and his engineer show an artist’s sketch of the residential project.

Radstock Street in Dorr may be getting an addition of 20 single-family homes if a developer’s plans win Township Board and Planning Commission approval.

Brian DeSmit and his engineer appeared before the Planning Commission Tuesday evening to outline his plans to build 20 dwellings on the south end of the street, which Jason Derry of Professional Code Inspections called “the last carved holdout” for the residentially developed area of town. DeSmit stressed these will not be site condominium dwellings, and each lot will be about three-quarters of an acre.

Because DeSmit was giving only preliminary application plans, the commission scheduled a public hearing on the project for 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, again at the old township hall at the corner of 18th Street and 142nd Avenue.

Some neighbors of the project expressed concerns about water drainage and what it might do to their taxes.

The engineer, speaking of draining issues, promised. “There’s going to be less water runoff than there is there today.”

Sidewalks also will be required, according to the township ordinance.

The other half of the Plan Commission meeting was taken up by continued consideration of a request to put in a private road at 1265 138th Avenue, and again there were concerns about water drainage issues.

Landowner Austin Naber said he wants to establish the road within a rural estates parcel, a request that was tabled in April. He presented a draft of the road maintenance agreement and said a retention basin would be installed. He offered up a special land use application.

Though neighbors expressed worry about possible drainage issues, it was notes the Allegan County Drain Commission would examine the area.

In the other matter, commissioners vote to continue paying $775 a year to renew membership in the Michigan Association of Planning.
