Curly Cone, located in the Yankee Springs/Gun Lake area, will have a ground-breaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, for a pickleball facility that includes six courts.
This project was started 19 months ago by Phyllis Wordhouse and Ken Pechumer, first trying to locate the courts at a local township park and then a local church. They never gave up and found a way to partner with local business owner Julie Fox at Curly Cone. Fox supplied the land and Ken and Beth Pechumer are donating the courts.
“Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America,” Wordhouse said. “It has many health benefits and is played by people of all ages and capabilities. The top players represent all age levels.”
Just before the pandemic hit, a group of enthusiasts launched a pickleball league at the Wayland City Park Thursday evenings.
The court will be installed at Curle Cone,Curley Cone, 12850 West M-179 Highway (Chief Noonday Road).
