Snow thunderstorm plays havoc, closes schools

All area schools and businesses were closed Thursday because of a winter storm that included snow thunder and dumped as many as five inches of the white stuff..

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement on Facebook: “Deputies in Allegan County have worked throughout the night on a number of traffic crashes and slide offs resulting from poor weather conditions, particularly on the west side of the county.

Currently, high winds and blowing snow have resulted in treacherous travel conditions in and around Allegan County, which have caused a number of crashes involving semi-trucks and other vehicles as well as fallen trees and downed powerlines.

“Based on reports from those working in these conditions, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office is recommending the general public avoid operating vehicles on the roadways unless absolutely necessary until road commission crews can clear the roadways or the weather begins to improve.”
