Soph hurdle ace Courser 1st at Hastings Invitational

The Wayland girls’ varsity track team Friday finished eighth among 16 teams in the Hastings Invitational while the boys’ squad took 10th.

Middleville Thornapple Kellogg finished first with 1,709 total points, Hamilton was runner-up and Cadillac third. The Lady Wildcats scored 1,227.5. The scoring was done according to Michigan Track Coaches’ Association (MITCA) rules, with 30 points for first place all the way down to one point for 30th.

The Wildcat boys finished 10th with 1,082 points. Kalamazoo Loy Norrix won with 1,644, Lansing Waverly was second and Cadillac third.

Some of the Lady Wildcats’ highlights included:

  • Sophomore Corrina Courser captured first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time 16.79 seconds and took fourth in the 300 hurdles in 51.9 seconds. Courser also was fifth in the 200-meter dash in 28.73 seconds and freshman Madelyn Probst checked in eighth.
  • Senior Maggie Whitney finished sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:40.1.
  • Freshman Naomi Oosterhouse was ninth in the 1600 with a time of 5:57.31. She also was 10th in the 3200 in 12:58.7.
  • The 800-meter relay team of Khylea Wells, Jazmyn Santos, Mackenzie Wolf and Probst finished fifth in 1:55.88.
  • The 3200 relay quartet of Oosterhouse, Zoe Antel, Abigail Hasse and Whitney was fifth with a time of 10:56.23.
  • Probst tied for sixth place in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 5 inches.

Highlights from the Wildcat boys’ meet:

  • Junior Caleb Wolf copped third place in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 23.89 seconds, and Seth Sevenski-Popma was sixth. Wolf also checked in fourth in the 400 in 52.42 seconds.
  • Devin Jakey, Ashton Ordway, Sevenski-Popma and Travis Cutler hooked up for a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter relay in 46.7 seconds.
  • Jakey, Ordway, Sevenski-Popma and Wolf finished fifth in the 800 relay in 1:36.35, missing fourth by just three-hundredths of a second.
  • Sophomore Elijah Veldman cleared 10-6 to take sixth in the pole vault.
  • The Wildcat track teams will be back in action at home Wednesday against East Grand Rapids.
