A “Sounding of the Siren” public celebration to recognize successful collaborative partnership and fund-raising effort to purchase a severe weather siren to enhance public safety in the Gun Lake area will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17.
The event will take place at the Yankee Springs Recreation Park, 2104 South Briggs Road.
A spokesman for the Gun Lake Tribe of Pottawatomis said, “The Gun Lake Protective Association raised money to purchase a tornado warning siren, which has been installed on Gun Lake at the Yankee Springs Rec Park. This siren alerts the public to take shelter due to inclement weather, and most importantly, in the event of a tornado. This type of warning system is much needed at large lakes such as Gun Lake.
“The Gun Lake Tribe made a monetary contribution, along with several local units of government, towards the purchase of the severe weather siren. The other contributors were Yankee Springs Township, Orangeville Township, Martin Township and Wayland Township, each of which border Gun Lake. ”
The Gun Lake Protective Association has invited the Gun Lake Tribe and each of the townships to take part in “Sounding of the Siren” ceremony to recognize the partnership that exists between these units of government. After a brief ceremony the siren will sound. Earplugs and light refreshments will be provided.
