Wayland had a reasonable shot at winning its homecoming game Friday night, even though perennial power and defending state champion South Christian was coming to town.
The Sailors this season had fallen on hard times, and like Wayland has only posted one victory in its first seven games, and that one for both over Hastings.
But it was not to be.
South Christian started strong by grabbing a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter and was able to hang on the rest of the way for 30-19 triumph.
The Wildcats pulled to within one point, 14-13, in the third period, but South answered with 10 points. Wayland was down by one score, 24-19, with just under eight minutes to play, but the Sailors picked up the last six.
Wildcat senior quarterback Tanner VanDyke threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, both to Michael Kelly, who also had 140 yards receiving on the night. Matt Schaendorf and Justin Kiry combined for 158 yards rushing.
Wayland was fresh from its first victory of the season, 34-32 over Hastings, which had lost to South 50-28.
The Wildcats have failed to hold its opponent under 30 points in all eight of its contests this season.
Wayland will close out its season next Friday evening against Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills, which was upset by Hastings this week.
