ids South Christian bowling team pulled off an upset Monday afternoon by tying the powerful Wayland girls.
The Wayland girls got off to a quick start winning the first Baker game 146-128 and the second 158-140 for a quick 10-0 lead.
As it turned out, points would be tough to come by in the individual games. In the first individual game, the Lady Wildcats gave up the lead late in the ninth and 10th frame to lose 861 to 846 and only taking 2 of the 9 points. Sophomore Sydney Urben led the way with a great 257 game (a new high for her in high school competition).
In the second game, the Sailors continued their torrid bowling. The Lady Wildcats hung tough and closed the gap to give themselves a chance for the win, but just were unable to finish with a strong enough end of the game to overcome the early deficit and fell by just eight pins 850 to 842. The girls did manage to take 3 individual points the last game, paced by senior Alicia Sweeney’s 203 and hung on for the 15-15 tie.
South Christian’s Tori Gaskell threw a great 278 her second game to go with a solid 212 first game. The Lady Wildcats were paced by Urben (257-182=439) sophomore Marissa Bruinsslot (166-172=338) and senior Erin Porteous (168-162=330).
“Tonight was the best the Lady Wildcats have bowled so far this season,” coach Bill Holbrook said. “It was a solid night for the Lady Wildcats and a great night for South’s ladies. A very exciting match. I just wish they didn’t have to end in a tie. Someone deserved to win tonight.”
Holbrook will coach his last head-to-head match for Wayland Wednesday at Airport Lanes in Wayland.
