The South Main Street paving project has been snake bitten again.
Just when it looked like everything was finished last week, including the paving, City Manager Josh Eggleston Tuesday night told the City Council that four spots along the street from Sycamore to 133rd Avenue need be dug up and redone. The city manager the development is frustrating, particularly in light of the original goal of completion by Aug. 22.
Though there is nothing said about when “open to traffic” starts now, there has been speculation it’s Sept. 16.
Eggleston said he, other city officials and paving contractor Reith-Reilly are frustrated about the most recent development, not to mention local motorists.
The city and Michigan Department of Transportation have shared costs for a project to install left turning lanes on South Main from Sycamore to the south city limits, resulting in no street parking allowed any more on the that portion of the main artery.
In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, the City Council:
- Had the first reading of a proposed noise ordinance, the first such law in the city. It was agreed to allow noise to midnight Fridays and Saturdays and to let local police officers use their discretion after receiving complaints.
- Had the first reading of a fire department cost-recovery ordinance after learning the ordinance adopted years earlier had not been signed, nor published.
- Adopted a cross connections ordinance that would update enforcement rights from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).
- Agreed to requests for use of city assets for Monster Mash next month, Henika Library’s “Touch a Truck” event and Dahlia Cart.
- Approved application for a $5,000 PAR plan insurance grant, probably to purchase speed boards for the police department.
- Officially set the hours of local Halloween trick-or-treating for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
- Approved requests for temporary liquor licenses for Open Road Brewery, Ladies on Main Street and Monster Man events.
