Third-graders in Lori Howell’s classroom at Steeby last month presented the City Council with their project to install bat houses in the City Park and Rabbit River Trail. Now comes Danielle LaJoye’s Steeby third-graders who will do the same on school properties.

The latter group made a presentation to the Wayland Board of Education Monday night. They also reported they enlisted the services of former teacher and Principal Jon Jensen and former board member Don Borgic.

Jensen insisted on giving some credit as well to teacher Joe Youngblood and his woodworking classes at the high school for their help in the project.

A handful of class representatives presented board members with facts about how benign the nocturnal bats are.

In other business at Monday night’s meeting, the school board:

• Officially recognized and honored the high school robotics team that captured third place in its division in the world competition earlier this spring.

• Awarded the $47,040 bid from Life Plus to replace florescent light bulbs in the district with LED bulbs.

• Awarded the $31,500 bid from S & S Electrical Contractors to install the 8,000 new bulbs.

• Agreed to spend $144,822 with Fritz Signs of Ann Arbor to make all signs digital at all six buildings within the district.

• Approved renewal of the annual contract with the Allegan Area Educational Services Agency (AAESA) at a slight increase from last year, according to Finance Director Pat Velie.

• Renewed a five-year contract for copier services with Applied Imaging.

• Agreed to spend $62,000 with SE Computers for services for teachers’ work stations.

• Voted to spend $28,861 with Moss Communication for universal power source protection.
