Steeby students wear denim to support kids with rare diseases

Staff and students at Steeby ElWorld Rare Disease Day (2)ementary School in Wayland wore denim Friday to recognize World Rare Disease Day, which falls on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Elana Savickas (student in Beth Rood’s second grade class) has a younger brother Oakley, 4, who has a rare disease called Prune Belly Syndrome. He also has kidney kisease. Check out their facebook page called “Team Oakley”: https://www.facebook.com/OakleysOpportunity?ref=br_tf
Students were asked to wear denim, the official color for rare diseases. Students received a denim-colored ribbon from their teacher. Elana’s Mom, Sarah Savickas, donated 300 ribbons to Steeby Elementary.
The family is running a Band Aid Drive on behalf of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and is looking for band aids with “cool designs.” Sarah said that she will accept band aids until March 15. Band-aid donations can be sent directly to the address listed on the Facebook page, or can be brought to Steeby Elementary School in Wayland.
Steeby staff members also wore denim and designated their casual for a cause fund to support World Rare Diseases.
