Wayland City Manager Josh Eggleston told council members Monday evening he is crafting an offer to a new city clerk, but did not disclose who it is.
The new clerk will succeed Michelle Herman, who retired last December. Kristin Engel, meanwhile, has been serving as acting clerk for six months.
Eggleston said last week’s interviews were with seven finalists and council members Jennifer Antel and Rick Mathis, who sat in on the sessions, said they were well satisfied with the candidates.
The city manager said perhaps he would have an announcement as soon as next week.
In other business at Monday’s meeting, the council:
• Was told by Eggleston that the city’s insurer will pay $13,625 for repairs at the City Park pavilion that was damaged by a storm last spring. Total cost will be about $20,000. Labor costs will be absorbed by volunteers from a local church who will be guided by a fellow congregation member who is a licensed builder.
• Learned from Eggleston that crack seal work on Main Street is expected to be completed soon.
• Was told by Police Chief Mark Garnsey that, “This COVID thing seems to be driving negative behavior,” as he and his offers have seen an uptick in complaints about domestic assault, fights over campaign signs, reckless driving and parking issues, “He added, “The people seem to be on edge.”
