Walter G. Tarrow, aka “The Subterranean” columnist on Townbroadcast, made a trip to Grand Valley State University Monday with his wife, Janet, to get a look at “The Sweetheart Tree” on the bridge in the middle of the GVSU campus. Walter, in a fit of pique 51 years ago, carved a heart on a tree on the bridge near Padnos Hall, declaring his undying love for this then-girlfriend. The couple earlier this month celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and the carved heart remains, but the “Walt + Janet” inscription is no longer visible.

Very nice story. Congratulations on your 50th.
Thank you, Mr. Traxler
Fifty years. I’m happy for you both. Here’s to continuing on.
Thank you, young sir. It was a great pleasure seeing you again. By the way, Sisters Brothers is showing at my local cinema through tomorrow. I plan on catching it before it leaves and I’ll rview it in the next opulent days.
I would like to pay tribute to Mr. Young for his phenomenal powers of recollection and unassailable devotion to preserving the historical record of bygone days. He takes a pretty good photo too.
A very happy anniversary to you both. You appear to be still very much in love. Maybe a new heart should have been incised in the tree? Best to you for 50 more!
Thanks, Lynn. Actually we’re even more so in love. (I wrote this right while we were squabbling over what to have for dinner LOL)
Sweet! (And funny, too!)
