The Wayland Board of Education Monday unanimously approved a new three-year contract for Superintendent Norman Taylor, running through the year 2018.
Taylor, who came on board at the end of 2010, succeeding Eivor Swan, had a three-year pact that was to expire June 30, 2016. His salary listed on the school district’s web site is pegged at $130,976. He was granted a 1 percent increase, which would bring his annual pay up to $132,285.
The superintendent does not receive insurance, but is given a stipend of $500 to buy his own. His annuity also has been increased by 1%.
Taylor said that among the eight superintendents in Allegan County, his salary is in the middle, ranked fourth. He added that when he first came on board his pay was among the two highest.
Board member Janel Hott said, “It would be my goal to bridge that gap between teachers and administrators.”
Wayland is the only school district in Allegan County that has four administrators paid more than $100,000 a year, yet the average teacher’s salary is about $47,000, second lowest in the county.
Taylor said teachers made a lot of gains last year with their new contract, but no details of that agreement, reached last October, have been made public, despite repeated requests for the data.
