The walls of the historic, but aging and dilapidated Moline Elementary School building came down today.
The Moline Agricultural School opened in 1937 and became part of the Wayland Union School District, but was mothballed in 2003 because of problems with the structure, particularly the roof.
The building was sold by the school district to Stephen Austin to operate his Happy Camper Mobile RV Service and Retro Rentals business for slightly less than $50,000.
The Leighton Township Board last year decided to use its $630,000 in federal American Rescue Plan funds to buy the old school, tear it down and use the property for expansion of recreation activities.
The Township Board last June awarded the low bid for demolition of and asbestos removal at the old Moline Elementary for $129,120 to Pro Tech of Grand Rapids.

Township Board members asked about somehow salvaging contents inside, but Clerk Rachel Fennema indicated the company believed “nothing in there is worth saving.”
