Thompson scores 14 of 15 ‘Cats’ points at state meet

Four Wayland High School athletes and two from Hopkins qualified for the Division 2 state track meet Saturday at Forest Hills Eastern High School.

Among them, only Wildcat senior Ian Thompson and senior Carson Noyes and Grace Brenner of Hopkins broke into the scoring column. The Wayland boys finished with 15 points and Hopkins girls were awarded 1.

Thompson took second in the 100-meter dash, at 10.78 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second away from being state champion. Jamal Hailey of Berrien Springs won it and the 200 as well. Thompson finished third in the 200-meter race with a time of 22.68 seconds.

Noyes captured eighth place in the shot put (49-06) to earn Wayland one point.

For Hopkins, Brenner was eighth in the shot put at 36-01. Wayland sophomore Kaharrie Purefoiy placed 24th in the 100 dash at 11.75 seconds. Junior Breanna Hyde finished 18th in long jump with a leap of 14-08.25.
