Three Wayland Middle School students from have been named in the annual America & Me essay contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.
The three students, who earned first, second and third place for their school, were Ashtyn Fekete (first), Megan Rose (second) and Kendra VanKoevering (third). All three received award certificates for their achievements. As the school’s first place winner, Ashtyn’s name will also be engraved on a plaque for permanent display in the school.
Ashtyn’s first place entry now advances to the state level competition, from which the top 10 essays in Michigan will be selected. The winners, who will be announced in April, will each receive a plaque, a medallion and a cash reward of $1,000. The top 10 essayists also will be honored at a banquet in Lansing.
Several thousand eighth-graders from nearly 400 Michigan schools participated in the 2016-2017 America & Me essay contest. The topic of this year’s contest was “My Personal Michigan Hero.”
