Three local girls’ hoop squads absorb defeats

Harmony Laker: 32 points

The Wayland girls’ basketball team took a 19-2 Forest Hills Northern outfit down to the wire before losing 74-62 in overtime Tuesday night.

The two teams were knotted at 60-60, before the extra session, in which Northern failed to score a single field goal, but nailed 14 free throws instead. Wayland, meanwhile. managed only two points in overtime and starting players Harmony Laker, Laney Wolf and Izzy Johnson fouled out.

The foul shot differential was 49 to 14 in Forest Hills Northern’s favor.

Laker turned in a particularly strong offensive performance for the Wildcats, scoring 32 points, including four there-point field goals. Addie Sikorski contributed 17 points, Johnson seven and she , Marissa Ainsworth and Wolf each drilled a three as well.

The loss dropped Wayland’s overall record to 13-8. Forest Hills Northern was champion in the O-K White Conference.

Hopkins girls 39 Allegan 27

The Lady Vikings lifted their season record above the .500 mark at 11-10 with the victory. They will face Covenant Christian Thursday night to close out the regular season.

Wyoming Potter’s House 51 Martin girls 41

The verdict left the Lady Clippers with a season record of 9-12 while Potter’s House now is 8-13.

“Potter’s House had a great atmosphere tonight for their Senior Night and it was great for us to play in a rowdy environment,” said coach Ben Schipper. “It served as great preparation for what we hope are some great playoff atmospheres.

“I was very happy with our offensive aggressiveness tonight,” he added, but Potter’s house had a big girl who blocked a lot of shots. “We haven’t really gone up against a shot blocker this year, so hopefully we learn how to handle that better now that we have the experience.”

The coach praised the effort of Marybeth Ritchie, who made her first career three, guarded the big girl and dropped in 11 points. Torryn Harris scored eight, grabbed seven rebounds and Maggie Jager played a very solid game contributing 6 points and some effective minutes. Avery Jager had eight points, Anna Jager had six points and six rebounds and Maggie Jager chipped in six points.

Martin will conclude its regular season Thursday night with a game against Fennville.
