The three incumbents on the Wayland City Council were returned to office for another two-year term in Tuesday’s election.
Lisa Banas was the top vote-getter in the runoff with 399 votes. Mayor Pro Tem Jennifer Antel received 389 and Rick Mathis 389.
Challenger Sheryl Hamilton made a strong run with 296 votes, but is no stranger, as she served on the council from 2005 to 2011 and was making a bid to return to city government.
Antel will begin her seventh two-year term in the council and both Banas and Mathis will be sworn in for their third.
In the other election Tuesday, the Non-Homestead millage renewal for Martin
schools was passed overwhelmingly by a 212 to 54 count, with 79.7 % voting in the affirmative. The levy is for 18 mills for
businesses and second residential homes.
Though there was plenty of important decisions on the ballot, only 21.7% of
registered voters in Wayland City showed at the polls, 22.2% in Wayland Township, 18% in Dorr Township and 17% in Leighton Township.
