The Wayland boys’ varsity track team finished third in the O-K Gold Conference meet Saturday in the cold, wind and rain.

The Wildcats came up with 116 team points. Ottawa Hills won the league meet with 137 and South Christian was runner-up with 127.

The Lady Wildcats, meanwhile, checked in sixth with 40 points, as Middleville Thornapple Kellogg won the championship with 182.5 points.

Junior Lee Anderson was league individual champion in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.08 seconds and he was runner-up in the 300-meter lows at 43.45 seconds.

Mccarty Carpenter won the league title in both the shot put with a toss of 47-07.25 feet and in the discus at 135-03. He won the latter competition by a whopping 18 feet.

But the heaviest scoring for the day came in the pole vault, where senior Perry Carter took the title by clearing 12 feet and Owen Glass tied for second at 11-6.

Glass also was second in the open 800 at 2:08.72 and teammate Jeremy Pletcher was fourth. Carter was fourth in the 3200 and sixth in the open 1600.

The 3200-meter relay team of Carter, Glass, freshman Caleb Pletcher and Jeremy Pletcher finished, just six-tenths of a second slower than conference champ Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

Caleb Pletcher also took a third in the high jump by clearing 5-8. Another freshman, Devin Jakey, placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-08.75.

The top individual performance for the Lady Wildcats was turned in by junior Lauryn Spencer, who was second in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.08 seconds.

Sophomore Maggie Whitney checked in third in the 800 meters in 2:35.08.

Also copping a third was the 3200 relay team of Whitney, Zoe Antel, Haley Bilger and Mickala Kohtz in 10:47.72.
