The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team absorbed its first loss of the season Tuesday on the road against Detroit Country Day.

The Wildcats lost 81-61 after falling behind by 16 points in the first quarterr and battling their hosts almost evenly the rest of the way.
The Yellow Jackets surged to a 24-8 advantage in the first eight minutes and were enjoying a cushion of 45-23 at intermission.
Assistant coach Chris Jasinski said Country Day “came out early and caused Wayland to turn the ball over, which led to some easy baskets for the home team. Turnovers would be the story of the game as the Wildcats gave the ball up 21 times compared to only 13 for the Yellow Jackets. Those 21 turnovers led to 22 points for Country Day.”
Senior forward Carter Nyp led Wayland with 16 points, junior pivot Cory Ainsworth had 11 and senior point guard Travis Cutler 10.
The Wildcats, now 2-1 for the season overall, will play Forest Hills Northern Tuesday, Dec. 26, in the opening round of the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament.
