Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker, Undersheriff Larsen, Lt. John Paul Damveld and Deputy Matt Langlois Tuesday presented two young boys with an Allegan County Young Hero Award in front of their peers at Pine Street Elementary.

Channing Haberman and Kaleb Connor were honored for the amazing job they did during an emergency situation.

Channing had arrived home after school in Dorr Township Jan. 19 to find his mom “acting really weird.” Langlois responded to the call, along with the ambulance.

“Channing did a great job of assessing the situation and knowing his mom has diabetes and determined this was a diabetic emergency she was having and called 911,” Langlois said.

Channing’s friend, Kaleb, stopped over at just about the same time and met Deputy Langlois in the driveway and brought him right to his friend, who was attempting to help his mother.

“Both boys did a great job of staying calm and putting the dogs away before the ambulance arrived and guiding everyone into the house once they arrived,” Langlois said.”Channing did a great job of explaining his mother’s symptoms to dispatchers and EMS once on scene, he even got her a cookie to try and help her raise the level of her blood sugar.”

When EMS began checking out Mrs. Haberman. they advised she had a blood sugar count of 40 and needed to be transported to Metro Hospital for further treatment. She has since made a full recovery.

“Excellent work by both of the boys, they should feel proud and their family as well,” Baker said.
