Martin and Wayland claimed three state champions in the individual wresting tournament Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit.
Winning their finals matches were Logan Gilbert (106 lbs.) and Haylen Buell (132), both of Martin, and Lane Button (150) of Wayland.
Besides those champions, four others were named all-state based on finish, Martin’s Cole Reitz, Jayce Ritchie and Jack Bagwell and Hopkins’ Max Pigeon.
Buell, who finished with a 45-4 record for the season, won his Division 4 finals match Saturday by fall in 2:24 over Logan Mears (Union City HS).
Gilbert, with a record of 52-3, won by 5-2 decision in the finals over Jordan Zambon (Gabriel Richard (Riverview).
Button, who completed his season undefeated in 48 matches, won by a 4-2 decision over Fabian Facundo (Freeland) on a third period takedown. He is believed to be Wayland’s first-ever state champion.
Fourth Place — 120 – Cole Reitz (Martin) pinned Iverson Espinoza-Rojo (Addison) in 2:03 in the consolation semifinals, but lost by fall in 2:19 to Finn Carlin (Gobles) in the consolation finals.
HOPKINS — Sixth Place — 113 – Maximus Pigeon won by 15-0 tech fall over Emmanuel Hernandez (Kent City), but lost by sudden victory for James Thommen (Montague) and to Malaki Mosher (Madison) in a 10-7 decision.
Sixth Place — 126 – Jayce Ritchie (Martin) lost by fall in 2:12 to Colin Kuhn (St Louis). He lost pin in 2:05 to Kaiden Rieth (Niles Brandywine) in the battle for fifth place.
Eighth Place — 144 – Jack Bagwell (Martin) lost by sudden victory to Trenton Mansfield (Gobles) and by 4-1 decision to to Aidan Taylor (Union City.
