Two Wayland ESA students earn culinary honors, trip

The Allegan Area ESA Tech Center Culinary Arts program had one team place fourth in the KitchenAid sponsored Pasta event at the ProStart competition to win a day with KitchenAid at the Senior PGA event in Benton Harbor May 22.

The Tech Center students will be cooking as well as participating in the festivities at the golf event.

The one team’s pasta dish that earned the honors was completely unique — a peanut butter pasta with a Thai garlic sauce. It was served with a green papaya, jicama, carrot and cucumber slaw, and topped with a peanut and herb gremolata.

The dish was created by the team of Adriana Jacobs of Plainwell Community Schools and Bryce Gunderman and Kaden Schropp of Wayland Public Schools.

The other pasta team created an Indian inspired dish. It was a garam masala infused fettuccini with a spicy tomato coconut masala sauce. It was topped with a cucumber raita and served with a mango and red onion salad.

Three students also took part in the Knife Skills competition. Bryce Gunderman of Wayland took first place overall. He won a knife set and a scholarship from Michigan State University.
