Seniors Dilon Aten and Lacey James and Presley Hudson and Caroline (C.J.) Miller all have been selected to the all-O-K Gold Conference boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, respectively.

Aten, a four-year starter for the Wildcats at point guard, is the all-time career leading scorer in local basketball history, eclipsing Alex Lyle’s former record. He has scored more than 1,000 points in his four years and he led the team in assists and steals as well.

James, who transferred to Wayland at the start of his sophomore year, like Aten is a repeat all-league selection. A finalist for the Michigan Mr. Basketball award, he led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding this season, turning in numerous “double-double” performances by hitting double figures in both categories.

Aten plans to play at Cornerstone University after graduation. James is yet undecided where he will play college basketball.

For the Lady Wildcats, Hudson has averaged more than 21 points per game during the season and has led the squad in assists and steals. She has started at point guard for four seasons.

A top five finalist for the Michigan Miss Basketball award, she is Wayland’s all-time career scoring leader and has eclipsed more than 1,000 points. Hudson will play at Central Michigan University after graduation.

Miller has been a two-year starter for the Lady Wildcats. She is the team’s second leading scorer and is regarded as the top defensive specialist. She has not decided as yet where she would like to play college hoops.

Sophomores Avery Hudson and Zac Nieuwkoop were named honorable mention for the all-conference teams and juniors Ali Martus, Ali Cutler and Hope Dollarhide earned honorable mention accolades for the girls.

The Wayland girls, with a 22-1 overall season record and ranked No. 4 in the last Class B state poll, are in action tonight at the regional semifinals in Charlotte against Belding after winning the district tournament title last Friday. They are coached by Marty Howard.

The Wayland boys, with an 18-3 overall record, are ranked No. 6 in the last state Class B poll, and they will play at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the district semifinals against Kentwood Grand River Prep. They are coached by Mike Hudson.
