Wayland High School students attended the Michigan Youth in Government Conference Feb. 28 – March 3 in East Lansing. Despite many snow days this winter, the team stepped up and made a lasting impact at the conference. Aylin Gulch, Brayden Probst, Anna Fifelski, Melissa VanDerHart and Alanya Foster all had their bills pass their committee sessions, pass the House and Senate, and get signed by the student governor. The local delegation’s president, Emma Helrigel’s National Issue Forum (NIF) proposal passed three committee sessions and passed the final vote in the NIF chamber. Helrigel also received best NIF proposal of the entire conference. Eli Merren joined Youth in Government this year and was part of the Press Corps. Not only were several of his stories published in the first newsletter and made it to the front cover, he also received the Press Corps Award for “Rising Star.”
