Verizon cell phone communications tower OK’d in Dorr Twp.

The Dorr Township Planning Commission Tuesday evening approved a special use request from Verizon Wireless to construct a communications cell tower on 20th Street.

Approval was granted after a public hearing and a presentation by Verizon vendor Judd Chaille. The 2,200-foot high tower on a 100×100-foot site will be placed on land owned by Clifford and Jane Cook.

Chaille said Verizon wants to expand coverage in this area.

“We don’t have adequate coverage now because more people have more cell phones, smartphones, wireless laptops and wireless tablets,” he said. “With this tower, we will be able to service Dorr and the central part of the township.”

The tower will have a light at its top because it is required by law for any tower more than 2,00 feet high.

The only questions from the public in the public hearing were asked by neighbor Ellen Snyder, but she appeard to be satisfied with the answers given by Chaille.

The Planning Commission approved the special use permit request by a 7-0 vote.
