Versatile Calvin Christian QB leads victory over Hopkins

Calvin Christian caleb-ryan-2-tackleFriday night ended Hopkins’ designs on a winning season by posting a 34-16 verdict in an O-K Silver Conference matchup.

The loss dropped the Vikings’ season record to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Hopkins fell behind 16-0 at the half after the Squires scored two touchdowns and two, two-point conversions in the second quarter. Quarterback Jake Bouma plunged over the goal line from the one and tossed a 46-yard scoring strike to Zach Bylsma.

The Vikings got on the board in the third period on a 10-yard run by sophomore back Ryan Haveman and he took it in for the two-point conversion.

But Bouma responded with a 57-yard TD scamper later in that same quarter and a two-point conversion made it 24-8 going into the final 12 minutes.

Bouma showed his versatility early in the fourth quarter by booting a 27-yard field goal to make it 27-8.

Sophomore quarterback Nolan Smith then hit Mark Davis with a 21-yard TD aerial to bring Hopkins to within 11, 27-16. But the Squires polished off the night’s scoring with Bouma firing a 65-yard TD pass to Blake Thomasma and then kicked the extra point.

Smith passed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 7-for-16, Brock Eller rushed for 72 yards on 17 carries and Caleb Ryan led the defensive corps with seven tackles.

The Vikings this Friday evening will take on Wyoming Godfrey Lee, which scored its first victory of the season, 22-0 last night.
