Emma Helder has been battling injuries to get back into the scoring column.

Both the Hopkins girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams were runners-up to Grandville Calvin Christian Tuesday in this season’s first O-K Silver Conference jamboree.

The meet took place at the L.M. Wise facility, so Hopkins was the host school.

The girls scored 48 points behind Calvin’s 34. Only four teams competed. Missing were Kelloggsville, Northpointe Christian and Wyoming lee.

Junior Laura Velderman again led the Lady Vikings, taking second in 21:04.5 and right behind her in third, just eight second slower was junior teammate Jasmine Fisher. Livia Battig of Belding was individual medalist in 20:57.55.

Calvin Christian took fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth to run away from the competition. The Squires also captured 10th through 14th places.

Gracie DeZeeuw was 16th for Hopkins, Alyssa Bielby was 17th and Emma Helder, continuing to battle injuries, was 19th.

The Squires breezed to the jamboree title with 38 points while Hopkins came in with 73, six ahead of Belding.
