The Hopkins girls’ track squad captured fourth place Friday in the 19-team Allegan Invitational, scoring 57.5 team points. Wayland was 10th with 31 points.

The Wildcat boys finished tied for seventh with Hamilton with 38 points and Hopkins was 15th with 16 points.

Berrien Springs won the boys’ meet and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg the girls’ meet.

The highlight of the competition was that Corrina Courser broke the Wayland school record in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.39, one-hundredth of a second better than the old mark of 16.4 set in 2008 by Amber Wierckz. However, she was second to a Berrien Springs hurdler by seven-hundredths of a second.

Hopkins had a double winner with senior Meghan Schulz in the throws. Though she wasn’t at her very best, she took the shot at 33-09 and the discus at 109-04.

Sophomore Savannah Emaus had a pretty good day. She tied for third in the pole vault, 8-0 and was fifth in the long jump at 14-8. She also took part in scoring points for the relays.

Other Lady Vikings scoring were Brittney Houseman, fourth in the 100 in 13.42; Emma Helder third in the 800 with 2:33.48; Jasmine Fisher sixth in the 1600 at 5:40.31; Houseman, Savannah Emaus, Anna Washburn and Hannah Crouch third in the 400-meter relay, 53.86; Houseman, Cassidy Finney, Washburn and Laura Velderman seventh in 800 relay in 1:58.22; Fisher, Gracie DeZeeuw, Alyssa Beilby and Helder fourth in 3200 relay in 10:42.85.

Besides Courser’s record-breaking performance the 4 x 800 team of Naomi Oosterhouse, Abigail Hasse, Zoe Antel and Maggie Whitney finished eighth; Courser was sixth in the 300 hurdles, thirrd in the 200, and anchored the fourth place 4 x 400 team of Whitney, Ella Martin and Madelyn Probst with a time of 4:34.25. The 4 x 200 team of Mackenzie Wolf, Khylea Wells, Jazmine Santos, and Madelyn Probst finished fifth, and Oosterhouse and Marie Tornbjerg finished 10th and 11th in the 1600.

“Madelyn Probst jumped out of her mind in the high jump,” coach Ray Antel declared, “clearing the opening height of 4’7″ and even did one better and jumped 4’10” to claim a fifth place medal.

Junior Caleb Wolf also had a big day. He took first place in the open 400-meter run in 52.06 seconds, was second in the 200 at 23.56 and fifth in the 100 at 11.81 and anchored the fourth-place 1600-meter relay team of Ashton Ordway, Devin Jakey and Seth Sevenski-Popma in 3:40.47.

Junior Robert Bausick threw the discus a personal best 122-04, good for fifth place. Devin Jakey was third in the long jump at 19-1.

The highlight for the Viking boys was sophomore Trey Collins, who was second in the pole vault at 11-9 and fifth in the long jump at 18-4.

Todd Henley sixth in the 3200, 10:27.57 and eighth in the 1600, 4:50.11.
