The Hopkins girls’ varsity cross-country team had an impressive outing Friday at the Michigan State University high school cross-country meet with a fifth-place finish among 28 teams.

The Lady Vikings scored 262 team points in the Division 3 and 4 division of the competition. Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart was first with 68 points and Pewamo-Westphalia was runner-up with 75.

The Viking boys’ squad turned in a respectable performance, finishing 20th among 31 teams with 479 points, one more than 19th-place Ovid-Elsie. Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart won that race as well, with 93 points and Hart was second with 111.

Hopkins senior ace Jasmine Fisher paced the girls by taking 11th individually with a five-kilometer time of 20:35.7. She was followed by Emma Helder in 38th, Alyssa Beilby in 63rd, Laura Velderman 65th and Alexis Zalis 86th.

Hopkins junior harrier sensation Todd Henley continued to impress by capturing runner-up honors individually with a blistering time of 16:23.4, only four second off the pace laid down by Sam Sharnas of Holland Black River.

Dan Rausch was 39th in 18:18, Zach Nutter was 80th, Andrew Hazen 197th and Jake Pastoor 200th.

Sophomore Carsen Young finished 34th for Martin in 18:10.5 Kyle Pallett 110th and Eli Dykstra 172nd.

Both Viking teams will open O-K Silver Conference season action with a jamboree Wednesday.
