Viking track teams step up challenges at Hastings Relays

Viking Logo2The Hopkins boys’ and girls’ track teams challenged themselves Saturday by taking on higher division opponents in the Hastings Relays. The Vikings were the only Division 3 school in the competition, where the boys took fourth and the girls fifth.

The girls’ team also was hampered by low numbers for the day, resulting in them having to scratch, and thereby not score in, four events.

Several teams finished among the top three, earning medals, but winning relay teams included:

• 4×400 Relay — (Nicole Pavlak, Josie Freybler, Julia Forbes, Kennedy Miedema) in 4:22.04.

• Long Jump Relay — (Julia Forbes, Ellen Bregg, Josie Freybler).

• Co-Ed 4×100 Relay—  (Julia Gercke, Maddie Krcatovich, Sid VanderTuin, Nik Schoonveld).

Hastings won the six-team competition with 96 points, three more than runner-up Grand Ledge. The Viking girls were only three points behind fourth-place Grandville and finished ahead of Eaton Rapids.

The Viking boys’ team also earned medals and the following placed first:

• Sprint Medley — (Lucas Soto, Sid VanderTuin, Dwight Miller, Hayden Graczyk).

• High Jump Relay — (Quincy Collings, Nik Schoonveld, Michael Francis).

• Long Jump Relay — (Quincy Collings, Hayden Graczyk, Logan Blank).

The host Saxons also won the boys’ meet with 104 points and Grand Ledge again was second. The Viking boys were just three points away from third, with 81 to Eaton Rapids’ 84 and finished above Grandville and St. Joseph.
