The Hopkins varsity football team appears to be headed for a second straight O-K Silver Conference championship and it seems to be just about a lock on winning a berth in the Division 5 post-season playoffs.

The Vikings Friday night improved their overall season record to 4-0 and league record to 2-0 with a 37-0 shutout over Wyoming Godwin Heights. The league title seems to be well within their grasp because they will play Godwin, Belding and Kelloggsville twice each in their six league contests. They’ve already beaten Belding and Godwin and they’ll take on a winless Kelloggsville outfit next Friday on the Rockets’ turf.

The unusual schedule this fall is the result of Wyoming Lee, Calvin Christian and NorthPointe Christian pulling out of the Silver in football competition because of troubles with numbers. All three are playing independent schedules.

Meanwhile, the Vikings already have defeated two non-league opponents, Morley-Stanwood and Ravenna and their only other outside the conference will be regular season ending date with Menominee from the Upper Peninsula. Ravenna, incidentally, has reeled off three straight triumphs since losing 22-20 to Hopkins in the season opener.

Six victories will give Hopkins a lock on a playoff spot. Two more top go with four already earned doesn’t seem to be far fetched.

Hopkins made quick work of the visiting Wolverines for homecoming Friday, with QB Trey Collins hooking up with end Drew Weber for the first TD and Colin Weber scoring the second on a short run.
