The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team completed its regular season on a positive note Thursday evening with a 64-51 victory over visiting Maple Valley.

The Vikings, who finished the regular campaign with a 4-15 overall record, had to overcome a sluggish start in which they trailed 19-11 at the close of the first period. They rallied in the second quarter to trim the deficit to two points, 26-24, at intermission.

A nice 23-12 burst in the third period enabled them to overtake Maple Valley and they never looked back the rest of the way.

Curtis Opatic played his best game ever, scoring 24 points and coming up with five steals. Jake Sapp, the only senior on the young Hopkins squad this year, netted 14 points and gathered 10 rebounds.

Coach Darrin Smith said, “Hopefully, we can use this game as momentum going into the districts against Plainwell.”

The visiting Lions were led by Seth Gard with 12 points and Jacob Brighton had 10.
