The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team overcame the weather and Calvin Christian Friday night 58-43.
The verdict left the Vikings with a 9-4 overall record and 4-2 in the league. They are still chasing Godwin, which is undefeated in the O-K Silver, and NorthPointe Christian.
Hopkins led 14-10, 32-24 and 44-33 at the period stops.
“I am happy with the pressure we gave on the defensive end and the way we guarded the three-point line,” coach Jake Jewett said. “They have good shooters, and we worked incredibly hard at keeping them out of rhythm. I was also happy with the discipline we showed down the stretch of the game, playing together and finding the best option on offense to score.”
Sophomore point guard Colin Weber led the Vikings with 16 points. Tyler Zomerlei chipped in 13 points, Drew Weber added 10, and Nolan Smith scored nine while continuing to play consistent across all phases of the game.
The coach said, “Kyle Pierce provided good pressure defense that sparked the Vikings into getting deflections and steals that led to points in transition.”
The Vikings play at 3 p.m. this afternoon at home against Kelloggsville in another makeup contest.
