The Hopkins varsity football team has had problems in getting extra points after touchdowns. This time it cost the Vikings an important O-K Silver Conference matchup Friday against Sparta.

The two teams, both of whom entered the evening tied for second place in the league with 3-1 records, also were knotted on the scoreboard at 14-apiece at the end of the third quarter. Sparta had led 7-6 at the half and opened up a 14-6 lead in the third period before Hopkins came back with a TD and successful two-point conversion.

In those last 12 minutes, both teams tallied one more touchdown. The Spartans kicked their third PAT. Hopkins’ two-point attempt for the win failed.

The loss spoiled a festive if rain-soaked Homecoming night.

The Vikings now are 3-2 in the league and 3-4 overall. They will play Belding next.
