The Hopkins varsity softball team ended its regular season with a record of 21-8 and it very likely has a very difficult task ahead as host of the Division 2 district tournament Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Lady Vikings, who defeated Covenant Christian twice in a non-league doubleheader Thursday probably will have to play tournament favorite Middleville Thornapple Kellogg, a team that won the O-K Gold Conference championship and sports a 25-4 overall record.
Hopkins won the twin bill first game Thursday in dramatic dramatic fashion, 13-12 walk-off victory. The game was tied at 12 in the bottom of the seventh when Maddie Wyngarden singled in the winning run.
Madelyn Schans was the winning pitcher, going one-third of an inning to save the game. Sierra Smith pitched six and two-thirds innings, but Schans came in at the top of the seventh with two outs to finish the inning.
Hopkins had 17 hits, Covenant Christian had 11. Emma Martonosi, Hannah Wubben, Emily Dimock, Schans, Haleigh Miller and Wyngarden each collected multiple hits. Dimock, Wubben, and Martonosi all had three.
Hopkins had 16 hits and Covenant Christian 12 in the nightcap. The Lady Vikings tallied seven runs in the third inning. Morgan Dykstra, Tori Miller, Sierra Smith, Madelyn Schans, and Emily Dimock all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.
Schans earned the victory in the pitcher’s circle, going seven innings, allowing 12 hits and nine runs while striking out five and walking one.
Miller, Hannah Wubben, Dykstra, Dimock, and Schans each collected multiple hits for us. Wubben and Miller had three apiece.
